Sheffield Eagles are gearing up for what is set to be a stern test of their top four credentials when unbeaten Leigh Centurions visit the Keepmoat.

The visit of Leigh is the start of what is set to be a thorough examination of Mark Aston’s outfit who have so far negotiated their way to eight straight victories in all competitions since their opening night defeat at Dewsbury Rams.

Aston’s side produced their best performance of the season so far when they dispensed with Featherstone Rovers on Bank Holiday Monday but need to up their game again when the league leaders come to town on Sunday (4.15pm).

“We are ready for the next challenge,” said Aston, the Eagles’ Director of Rugby. “We have to keep our feet on the ground. It is another quick turnaround because Tuesday we had to let them recover, on Wednesday night we went through some stuff and then we are into it again, but we are ready to go. They have won something like 18 games on the bounce, they are outstanding. They are playing well but we are really geared up for it. They will have noticed our score on Monday, they will have been watching us and saying that Sheffield are starting to hit form.”

The game against Leigh is just the starter for an appetising run of games with the main course coming the following weekend when the Eagles entertain Super League heavyweights Hull FC in the Challenge Cup fifth round at Bramall Lane. Also on the menu throughout April and May are games against teams with hopes of a top four finish in the Championship, with Bradford Bulls and Halifax also on the horizon for Aston’s side.

“We then have a massive game against Hull FC back at Bramall Lane, followed by the likes of Halifax and Bradford Bulls but these are the games that we want to play and coach in” Aston enthused.

“We took a massive step forward against Featherstone, I have been waiting for that, the grey hairs have started vanishing now and the wrinkles have gone too.”
