SHEFFIELD Eagles boss Mark Aston is checking on worrying injuries to key players with a crucial game at Halifax coming up.
He’s hoping a weekend without a game will give Menzie Yere, Joe Hirst and Dane McDonald the extra time to reach fitness.
A win at Halifax would see the Eagles go second in the Championship with three games to play.
Loose-forward Hirst is the major concern after missing the win over Keighley Cougars with a knee injury that could end his season.
“We have to check him because he might need an op on his knee,” said coach Mark Aston. “We’ve over a week before the Halifax game, the knee is settling down and we’re hopeful.”
A decision on Hirst – eight tries from 21 games - will depend on tests in training this week. Likely replacement McDonald has been troubled for a month by a back injury.
