Sheffield Eagles launch youth scheme

SHEFFIELD Eagles have thrown down a challenge to Super League clubs with a new initiative aimed at developing young players.

The Championship club is launching the ‘Junior Eagles’ - a train-on squad for the 13 to 14 age group as a first step to playing professional rugby league.

Super League clubs are dropping their under-20s team next season but the Eagles will continue to run teams at Scholarship, Academy and Reserve grade. Head coach Mark Aston said: “The Super League clubs are playing a very dangerous game by shrinking the performance pathways. We’re ready to stand alone to make sure that our junior development is as strong as anywhere.”

A trial for potential players is planned during the October school half-term.

The Eagles play their final league game of the season at Dewsbury Rams tomorrow, kick-off 3pm.
