Ben Blackmore says Sheffield Eagles are starting to show signs of finding the required mentality as they look to build on victory over Swinton.

Eagles’ brittle confidence during the early rounds of The Championship saw Mark Aston’s side throw away several promising positions, but they found the right formula at Heywood Road with Blackmore inspiring a late victory.

The winger bagged two tries as Aston’s side showed the guts to close out the win.

The ex-Featherstone flyer now says Eagles must repeat their commitment against Leigh as they look to pull away from the relegation zone.

“That was massive win for us, and we’ll look now to use it as a platform to try and build,” he said.

“The last two games we gave a good account of ourselves for 40 minutes but let it slip at the end. We just need to improve that mentality, and we did in the Swinton game.

“We were just happy to get that all important win. It was a decent team performance, although we could have completed better and taken more of the opportunities that we created. It was the result that mattered at the end of the day so we were delighted. It was a nerve-wracking end to the game, so we are just happy to get over the line, and now we can try and it take it forward.”

A cast of top performers were missing last weekend including Matty James, Garry Lo and Josh Toole.

Blackmore praised the youngsters who stepped up, helping the Eagles to only their second victory of the campaign.

“We were missing players, the likes of Matty James are always a miss, but there are some good young players coming through here and they have done well, so it shows that they are pushing for spots,” Blackmore added.

“The dressing room was a good one after the Swinton game. All the lads are right on board, and it is nice to come into training with smiles on our faces.
