Sheffield Eagles’ Dominic Brambani is set to be recalled for the Challenge Cup home tie against Oldham Roughyeds this weekend.

Brambani was a surprise omission from director of rugby Mark Aston’s 17 for last Sunday’s victory over Workington Town, as the Eagles maintained third place in the Kingstone Press Championship after a 14-12 success.

Aston was once again disappointed in his side’s display, citing the possibility of making changes for the second week running, with Brambani almost certainly earmarked for a return after playing in the opening four rounds of the season.

“I am still looking for that magic formula. I left out Dom to try a different approach and did it work? No,” Aston told The Star.

“Will he be back in next week? 100%. I need someone to manage the game, and I don’t think that we managed it well at Workington. That’s down to the half-backs and the decision-makers to do their job. They didn’t last Sunday.”Aston admitted it was a tough call to leave out one of his trusted lieutenants but he hailed Brambani’s professionalism as he was forced to watch from the stands.

“It was always going to be a tough call to leave someone like Dom out because he is the ultimate professional but he took it on the chin,” Aston explained.

“I spoke to him on the bench and sometimes you have to sit back and have a look, and that’s what he did. It is tough, especially when players are as committed as Dom is.”

Brambani isn’t likely to be the only change as the Eagles seek to find the recipe for success following two indifferent performances against Batley and latterly Workington.

Aston admitted he is closing in on a potential new recruit and is hoping to rubber -stamp the move ahead of the cup clash at the Keepmoat Stadium.

“Next week we need to be better and hopefully we will have a couple of new faces in who will add to the squad,” he added. “The thing is, whoever comes in has got to add something to us.

They need to come into that 17 and make a difference, and I am confident that they will.”

The fourth-round tie with Championship One outfit Oldham will be a 3pm kick-off at The Keepmoat Stadium this Sunday.
