Sheffield Eagles hopes of Challenge Cup glory ended as they were edged out 29-10 by London Broncos.

The Super League club were made to battle all the way by the Eagles but had the extra pace to take the quarter-final – the last cup game to be played at Don Valley before the stadium is demolished

Michael Knowles failed a fitness test, with Matt Garside starting in the back row for the Eagles.

London put on early press urewith captain Tony Clubb knocking on as he looked set to score under the posts and centre Dan Sarginson just held up over the line.

Eagles had the biggest crowd of the season on their feet with winger Scott Turner just unable to get on the end of a Patch Walker kick.

London’s speed around the ruck was causing problems and the first try came on 22 minutes with stand-off Michael Witt stepping out of a tackle to go over before adding the goal.

Eagles need swift response and got it with Walker getting a long pass to Menzie Yere who offloaded for Turner to go in at the corner but

Dominic Brambani couldn’t add the goal.

London danger man Jamie Soward hit the Eagles with a sucker-punch, going in from 25 metres from the a scrum.

In the final minutes of the half Eagles mounted a charge with Misi Taulapapa breaking the line before Garside was held on the line but the move broke down with Colton Roche knocking on for London to hold their 10-4 lead.

Eagles went at London from the restart with Turner running out of space and in touch as he went for a try at the corner.

London got a vital try with the video referee ruling that winger Michael Robertson had touched down after Tom Armstrong and Taulapapa had failed to clear a Witt high ball. Witt added the goal.

Determined defence by Eagles prevented the Broncos immediately pushing out their advantage.

With 20 minutes left Eagles defence on the right was caught cold by back-rower Shane Rodney who went in from 25 metres with Soward adding the conversion.The half-back added a drop-goal before converting a try from centre Rhodri Lloyd.

Eagles defiantly blasted back with Yere bustling over for 32 try of the season. Walker added the goal.
