Rugby League: Menzie Yere the man for Sheffield Eagles

If Sheffield Eagles need any inspiration ahead of Sunday's encounter at London Broncos, then they should look no further than to their returning hero.

Menzie Yere has left an indelible mark on many an opponent down years, helping to inspire some of Eagles’ greatest modern triumphs.

After enduring a frustrating start to the campaign after being forced to sit out the first three months of the season because of visa issues, the affectionately named ‘Jukebox’ returned last weekend in the heavy defeat to the Broncos.

With the Eagles in a rut, director of rugby Mark Aston is looking to one of his most trusted lieutenants to lead a fight-back, starting with an improved showing at the Trailfinders tomorrow afternoon (3pm).

“What he has is the pedigree and the presence to try and lead and do what he can do,” Aston said of the veteran centre.

“It was a positive to have him last weekend and it was massive for us. He did a couple of those Menzie things didn’t he. He is only going to get better. He is good for us.

“He is a threat and if people don’t defend he will hurt you, and if you run at him then he will put a shot on you. That’s what he does. He is a winner and he is so proud to play for Sheffield Eagles.”

Whilst the PNG ace may need time to rediscover the pace of competitive rugby league again, Aston is in no position to be able to ease any of his squad back into the firing line. A crippling injury list and a side out of form means it is all hands on deck as the Eagles attempt to upset the form book by repeating their victory over the Broncos in 2016.

The presence of Yere alone provided the biggest cheer from the Eagles faithful at the OLP last Sunday, with Aston stating he not only gives the supporters a welcome boost, but he brings the best out of his young teammates, in particular Jake Spedding.

“He played alongside Jake Spedding and that’s a good partnership for us,” Aston added.

“We are okay in the backs, we are good when Menzie is firing and when Speds is fit. Costello and the rest of the back line do a good job. It is the half-backs and the big fellas that are not doing their jobs at the moment.”
