Sheffield Eagles are resigned to losing their long-serving skipper Jack Howieson for a spell mid-season.

The Scottish international prop forward is facing possible surgery on a niggling knee injury for the second time in six months.

Coach Mark Aston rested Howieson for the game against Barrow but hopes he will lead the team in the Tetley’s Challenge Cup against Dewsbury Rams at Don Valley on Saturday.

“Jack has a knee problem that needs sorting out and we’ll get that done,” said Aston. “We’re looking at the dates now. The important thing is to get Jack right for the end of the season.”

Howieson made his Eagles debut in 2001 and is a veteran of nearly 300 games. He had ankle and knee surgery in the run up to this season.
