New loan signing Dave Petersen certainly ticks plenty of boxes high on Director of Rugby Mark Aston’s list of requirements.
After signing a one-month loan deal from Bradford Bulls, the versatile operator made his Eagles bow in the 40-12 win over Batley Bulldogs on Friday.
Aston has called on his more senior players to lead from the front, and he believes that the former Hull KR ace has the leadership qualities and mental fortitude he has been looking for.
“He reminds me a lot of Misi Taulapapa and Michael Knowles. People don’t like playing against those sort of players because they are fierce competitors and they want to win whether it’s a tackle or a run, he is going to be good for us,” said Aston.
“I’ve enjoyed this week with him and I’m sure there is more to come.”
It is believed Aston would like to extend his stay at the Keepmoat Stadium should the opportunity arise at the end of his current loan deal.
“Dave is contracted to Bradford for next year. Do they want to keep him? Well, if not we will know all about him.
“He has only trained two or three times with us but he is a tough cookie and a winner and he wants to be the best he can be. He is that sort of player that I love in and around the squad.”
Aston hasn’t ruled out extending his squad further as the Eagles approach the business end of the Kingstone Press Championship season.
With a top four finish looking likely the Eagles’ chief would like to have as many options as possible going into the ‘middle eight’, but said players are likely to be going out before any more additions are made.
The Eagles road show continues this Saturday when they host Whitehaven at Castle Park, home of Doncaster Knights, at 2pm.
