Sheffield Eagles’ Director of Rugby Mark Aston has revealed he is close to adding another addition to his squad.
Aston swooped for hooker Keale Carlile last week following his release from Super League outfit Hull Kingston Rovers, but the squad re-shuffle isn’t over yet with the Eagles’ chief closing in on a loan signing in the aftermath of their Challenge Cup fourth round success over Oldham Roughyeds.
With Wakefield second-rower Jon Molloy returning to Belle Vue after just once appearance in an injury-ravaged loan stint, there now appears to be room for fresh blood as Aston continues to strive for the perfect balance to his side.
“I have been looking and hopefully we can finalise a deal shortly to bring somebody in on loan,” Aston told The Star.
“There is still room for improvement; we are looking to be better so I am very much looking at adding to the squad.”
Aston’s options have increased following the return from injury of close-season signing Jamie Langley who made his long awaited debut at the weekend, whilst prop Mitchell Stringer looks set for some game time against Hunslet after recovering from a troublesome ankle problem.
With Carlile through the door competing for a spot with James Davey and youngster Greg Burns, plus the imminent arrival of another addition Aston will have some tough decisions to make in the build-up to Sunday’s clash with Hunslet.
“It is nice to win and we have kept getting the results but I am looking for improvements and there weren’t too many on Sunday,” Aston admitted.
“There are some massive games coming up over the next month or so and we need to start making the right noises in terms of our performances. If anyone watched us last weekend they won’t be too frightened of us at this moment in time.
“It is great that Langers (Jamie Langley) is back fit, Mitchell Stringer will play next week of that there is no doubt and then some of the other guys who were rested will be available. We have Briggsy (Kyle Briggs) to come back in and Misi (Talapappa) so there will be changes again because we are still looking for that magic formula. There are people throwing their hats in but at the same time there are people throwing their hats out of the ring.”
