Sheffield Eagles director of rugby says individual discussions and honesty will be the way forward as he looks to reignite his side following the punishing defeat to Leigh.

The Eagles have a break in the Betfred Championship calendar this weekend, as Aston looks to take advantage of the mini-hiatus to build up his side again after a tough day at the office last Sunday.

The Eagles chief knows he will have to mix up his approach as he looks to bring some much needed consistency to his side’s performances, and he has taken the decision to work one-on-one with his side as he looks for a positive response when they return to action against Rochdale Hornets on April 29th.

“What I’ve said over the last month is that I can’t be ripping into the team all the time because I get sick of saying the same thing week in, week out,” Aston admitted.

“What it is now, is me and them one-on-one and I’ll be chatting to players individually. I will be telling players what I see and what I think, and let’s see if they can take it. I can only be honest and I don’t want to be doing it in front anybody and everybody. It’ll be one-on-one and I won’t be pulling no punches. It will be straight down the line for one or two of them.

“The reality is that we knew Leigh would be a tough day at the office. We knew after the start that it would be damage limitation. In the second half we competed a bit more. Was that them taking the foot off the gas, that can happen, or was it us being a little more competitive. There weren’t too many of us coming away from that performance with positives, but we have to go again after the upcoming break.”

The break will also allow priceless extra time to patch up his side with Aston hopeful of calling upon the likes of Matty James, Jake Spedding, Josh Toole, Shaun Pick, Garry Lo and Cory Aston who have been missing with injury and illness over recent weeks.

Aston will also be hopeful that he will get the green light to involve new signing Paddy Burns, with a delay over clearance halting the potential for a debut against Leigh, whilst the wait for Menzie Yere’s clearance continues.
