Sheffield Eagles have added Irish international Matty Hadden to their squad for the pre-season games.

The prop or back row forward has come in on loan for a month from Championship One club Oxford.

“It’s a chance to have a look at Matty” said Aston. “He’s been training with us pre-season and was with us for a spell last year but he wasn’t quite ready and credit to him went out to Oxford and did really well.”

The 23-year-old played 18 games for Oxford last season and earned a late call up to the Irish squad – coached by Aston – for the World Cup.

He has the opportunity to earn a longer deal with Eagles needing cover in the forwards. Aston said: “Matty impressed me during the World Cup. He will play at Limoux and in Andrew Henderson’s testimonial at York pre-season.”

Aston is also stepping up his search for possible reinforcements with a back rower or centre a likely target.

He said: “We are looking and there’s the potential to add a couple of players.”

Forwards Duane Straughier (groin) and Eddie Battye (foot) are both making progress in their rehab following surgery.

“I’ve started some running,” said Straugheir. “I won’t make the French game and maybe not York but it’s going well.”
