Sheffield Eagles’ coach Mark Aston hopes of seeing many of his young players in game action before the new season starts have been dashed.
Aston had planned to run the rule over some on the fringe of the first team in a friendly at French Elite League leaders Limoux this weekend but a strike by French air traffic controllers forced the club to call off the trip.
“We were taking a few of the younger lads like Tom Bailey, Kadeem Williams, Greg Burns, Eddie Medford,” said Aston. “I’m disappointed for the younger players who have been training with the first team. The Limoux game would have been a good chance to see how they’ve developed.” The will now play only one friendly – at York next Sunday – before the new season kicks off.
Captain Mitch Stringer and Samoan Quentin Laulu-Togagae have been on a tour of their new Owlerton Stadium base. Stringer said: “We were impressed with the facilities.”
He added: “We just can’t wait for the season to start now and with our fans behind us it should be a great atmosphere in the stadium.”
