Sheffield Eagles’ Director of Rugby Mark Aston says Jamie Langley was withdrawn from the victory over Featherstone Rovers as a precaution.

The former Bradford Bulls ace was one of the Eagles’ marquee close season signings, but he endured a frustrating start to the campaign after an injury forced him to watch the opening rounds of the Championship from the sidelines. After battling back to fitness Langley was given his long awaited debut in the Challenge Cup fourth round victory over Oldham Roughyeds, and notched his first try in Eagles’ colours in the league success against Hunslet.

Fans feared the worst when he limped off on Monday, but Aston scotched fears of a re-occurrence of any long standing issue stating he was removed as a precaution. “He just took a knock on the quad and his knee has flared up a little but it is nothing serious” confirmed Aston. “We could have left him out there but it wasn’t worth the risk. All the lads wanted to be out there because they were enjoying it.”

Aston’s side arguably produced their best performance of the season so far by brushing aside a tough Rovers outfit with consummate ease. The Eagles moved back within two points of leaders Leigh Centurions but crucially they also opened up a six point gap to fifth placed Halifax, as they look to book a place in the Championship’s elite top four to give themselves a shot of making a long awaited return to Super League.

It has been a solid start to the season and Aston believes that his side have now made a real statement after a comprehensive victory against a side that were well fancied to gatecrash the top four.

“At half-time it was 20-0 and if you can do that against a strong Featherstone team then you know that you have a strong group,” he enthused.

“We have talked previously about having that aggression in our game and we had that in abundance against Featherstone. There are five tough games coming up for us but after that I am looking forward to them all.”
