Sheffield Eagles: Aston says experience of Wheeldon will be key in 2020 season

Sheffield Eagles director of rugby Mark Aston didn’t think twice when extending a two-year offer to the returning Scott Wheeldon.

Aged 33, Wheeldon represents one of the Eagles’ elder statesmen next season, and whilst other experienced signings penned one-year contracts, Aston was happy to give an extra year to the former Castleford and Featherstone ace.

Prop Wheeldon, who was one of Aston’s core figures during his first spell between 2016 and 2017, has plenty left in the tank as far as the Eagles chief is concerned, stating he feels there’s at least two more years of quality rugby league left in the Hull-born powerhouse.

“There was no problem as far as I was concerned,” Aston told The Star regarding the extra year.

“He's an honest kid, and what we have said if he falls out of love with it or if his body is telling him something then the second year will be discussed.

“But to be honest we all feel at this moment in time he has two years minimum left in him. We look forward to seeing him back in action.”

Wheeldon clocked up 19 appearances for Featherstone last season, twice starring against the Eagles in victories home and away in the league.

His on-field presence is without question, with Aston also confident his knowledge behind the scenes will also be invaluable with a clutch of youngsters who are still developing.

Aston added: “I am delighted to have him here, and we want him to help get these kids ready to one day come in. The knowledge they'll get off Scotty will be massive to them.”
