Sheffield Eagles claimed a Challenge Cup and league double as they beat

Halifax 31-18 to extended their winning run to eight games.

The victory at a chilly Bramall Lane last night cut the gap between the clubs at the

top of the Championship to one point with Eagles having a game in hand.

Fax edged the opening with former Hull KR playmaker Scott Murrell back in the team and making an impact.

Prop forward Tony Tonks used his power to offload in front of the posts to put hooker Luke Ambler in for the first try on eight minutes. Lee Paterson added the goal.

Halifax kept up the pressure with Ben Heaton touching down a Anthony Thackeray grubber kick before being rule offside.

Eagles came back with two tries in three minutes. Following a penalty prop Eddie Battye forced his way over for his first try of the season. Joe Hirst’s kick was collected by Menzie Yere who made space inside before sending Patch Walker under the posts. Dominic Brambani added both goals.

Eagles opted to take a penalty in from of the posts, kicked by Brambani, to push out their lead to 14-6 and minutes later the scrum-half denied Karl Ashall a try with a great tackle.

Fax hit back three minutes after the restart with full back Ryan Fieldhouse touching down a kick from Luke Ambler. Patterson added the goal. Eagles’ reply was a great offload by Ben Gledhill to send full back Quentin Laulu-Togagae scurrying in. Back rower Duane Straugheir added a quickfire score after picking up a loose ball. Brambani converted the first try.

The killer score for Eagles came with a 40-metre break from Yere who brushed aside tacklers before touching down for try 21 for the season. Brambani added the goal. Sam Barlow forced his way over with Paterson adding the goal to set up a tense finish but Brambani kicked a drop goal to deny Fax a losing bonus point.
