Priest makes comeback after crash

LUKE Priest is back in Sheffield colours tonight - just 14-months after almost losing his life in a horrifying track crash.

Priest is included in the Trophy clash at Stoke as a replacement for injured Tigers star James Birkinshaw.

And that means a return to the scene of his accident last summer when he suffered multiple injuries including a broken pelvis, legs, ribs and a ruptured bladder along with horrific internal bleeding.

He was in intensive care for weeks but stunned the speedway world on Wednesday when he rode in an individual meeting at Birmingham.

Sheffield boss Neil Machin said: "It's a true reflection of the courage within the lad, to get back on a bike after everything he's been through is a remarkable story.

"And the fact that he readily accepted the opportunity to ride for us at the scene of the accident is great credit to him, I'm sure he sees it as a chance to break down a big psychological barrier.

"Tonight is the first leg of the Sport Trophy with the return at our place on September 27 and they are meetings we want to do well in. Hopefully they will keep us going in the build up to the play-offs, which we all hope we will reach."

Priest was a regular for Sheffield's Conference League team, the Prowlers, before moving to Stoke when the club withdrew from the league and moved their training track facilities to Scunthorpe.

There's no Paul Cooper tonight as he has a grass track booking which he accepted before the late arrangement of tonight's Loomer Road date.

Tigers: Ricky Ashworth, Ben Wilson, Andre Compton, Paul Cooper R/R, Joel Parsons, Luke Priest, James Cockle.
