Piper plays winning tune with hat-trick

Damien Piper's scintillating hat-trick for Scorpions A in Division One of the Sheffield League featured a bruising encounter with Vulcan's Paul Johnson, which onlookers described as one of the finest matches ever witnessed in the local game.

Piper, ranked 27 in England’s junior boys list, came through 9-11, 18-16, 11-4, 8-11, 11-8, to earn the hosts a share of the points. He teamed up with Steven Arliss to win the doubles after Joe Dunn’s 3-1 victory over Steve Lyon.

Johnson gained some consolation with wins over Dunn and Arliss, a feat repeated by Stuart Wallace for the visitors. Lyon beat Arliss 3-1 in the final set of the match to secure a point.

In Division Three, Shiregreen’s Gary Crapper moved into second place in the leading scorers list with a treble against Wadsley Bridge C. Steve Carr’s brace, Gary Rains’ win over Nigel Coward and success in the doubles gave the hosts a 7-3 win.
