Owls: Sheffield Wednesday signing two players

SHEFFIELD Wednesday are signing Carlisle striker Gary Madine and Motherwell defender Mark Reynolds.

Undisclosed fees have been agreed, Owls manager Alan Irvine confirmed after his team's 2-2 draw with Charlton.

A deal for Reynolds, a centre half or left back, had looked unlikely earlier in the week when Wednesday and Motherwell could not agree on a fee.

But Motherwell manager Stuart McCall revealed today that his club had accepted an improved offer. They rejected Wednesday's initial bid of 75,000-plus.

McCall said: "We wish him all the best. He's been a great servant for Motherwell.

"It's good business for the kid and good business for Motherwell. We are getting money that we wouldn't get at the end of the season and it's better happening two weeks before the transfer window shuts than two days."

News of the Owls' swoop for Madine emerged just before today's game at Hillsborough.

Carlisle managing director John Nixon said: "We have been in discussion with Sheffield Wednesday since Thursday about Gary, and the player was keen to make the move once he had spoken to them and to those who advise him.

"Our manager then spoke to him and, after some consideration, we reluctantly agreed that we would accept the offer and allow him to go.

"He feels that it is a big club, with crowds often in the region of 15-20,000, and moving to a club like that is a challenge that he wants to take."

The deals follow the signing of new defenders Michael Morrison and Reda Johnson, who both made home debuts today.
