Tom Kohler-Cadmore says Yorkshire have title-winning quality in their ranks... but knows they have to show it

Yorkshire batsman Tom Kohler-Cadmore fully believes that there is the quality of a Championship-winning squad in the ranks at Headingley – but is also aware that he and his teammates have to go out and prove it when the season starts on Thursday against Glamorgan.

Yorkshire will be boosted by the availability of England skipper Joe Root against Glamorgan – where he is expected to come face-to-face with his younger brother, Billy – while the likes of Gary Ballance, Harry Brook and Adam Lyth make up a formidable-looking batting line-up.

The Tykes this week announced that seven of their players had signed new deals at Headingley, and there is some excitement building about a possible challenge for a first four-day title since 2015.

“If you look around the squad, there’s incredible talent,” Kohler-Cadmore said.

“There is a Championship winning side in there. I fully believe that. There are so many players in that dressing room who already have that experience.

“We’ve got the quality to do it, but it’s just about making sure we don’t get ahead of ourselves because there are other great teams out there.

“Essex and Somerset, their squads are just as strong as they have been for the last two or three years. And they are getting more experience as well.

“For us, we’re excited, we’ve got a great squad. But it’s not about names on paper, it’s about how you perform out there in the middle.”

The Tykes could hand a second ‘debut’ to Dom Bess, who spent time on loan at Headingley in the 2019 season before making the move permanent, while the likes of David Willey, Matthew Fisher and Duanne Olivier are all battling for places in Yorkshire’s bowling attack under skipper Steve Patterson.

“Competition for places is strong, it’s really good,” said coach Andrew Gale.

“I’ve said to the lads, ‘If you’re going to win a Championship, you need between 18 and 21 players.

“Just because they are not in the team at the start, it doesn’t mean they won’t play a part.

“Things can change fast in professional sport – injuries and loss of form. So the lads who aren’t in that side have got to play their part by staying in form in the second team and knocking the door down.”
