Speedway: 'We got there in the end' says Tigers number one Holder after Sheffield roses victory

Tigers win home meeting by 18 points

Sheffield number one Jack Holder notched a paid maximum in an important victory over Belle Vue at Owlerton.

And although he’s not a fan of double headers, where teams ride against each other home and away in the same day, he was pleased with the result.

He said: “It’s good. We got a win which is great, against Belle Vue, which is one of the tougher meetings, the War of the Roses, so it was good to get the win and to get that bonus point also.”

He said the heat in which the racing took place in Manchester early in the afternoon had not been a problem for the Australian riders, who are used to it, but was not a fan of having two meetings in quick succession.

“It’s a bit ridiculous to be honest, two meetings in one day, but that’s the way it is,” he said.

The meeting saw another strong finish to the meeting for Sheffield, with three 5-1 heat advantages in the last four heats.

But Holder said: “We don’t really pay that much attention to the score. There’s a lot going on in the pits, so we just do our own thing , and Steady (team manager Simon Stead) comes up and tells us what we need to do. I heard it was pretty close, but we got there in the end.”

Holder was unbeaten by an opponent, and his heat 10 victory prevented Belle Vue from reducing what was at that point a six point deficit, when they tracked world number two Brady Kurtz as tactical substitute.

He said: “It’s important to win them all - I don’t really care who’s in the race with me. I go out and do my job, what I’m paid to do, to be the number one,”

With Leon Flint (9+1) and Jye Etheridge (8) also notching big points scored on the the evening, he added: “It’s good - it’s only I think only our fourth home meeting so it’s good. Everyone is still finding their groove. It’s good that they’re getting the right set ups, and long may it continue.”
