Speedway: Chris Harris set to guest at Owlerton as Sheffield take on Belle Vue

Big name Chris Harris is set to return to Owlerton tomorrow, a week after riding Kyle Howarth’s testimonial.

But the former British Grand Prix winner will be wearing the red race jacket of Belle Vue, as he guests at number one for the visitors in tomorrow’s Sheffield v Belle Vue clash in the Rowe Motor Oil Premiership (Thursday June 20, 8pm).

The Tru7 Group Tigers are at full strength whilst Belle Vue use Harris, who won five of his six outings at Kyle Howarth’s Testimonial last week, as a guest at Number one in place of club captain Brady Kurtz who remains absent from the Aces’ line-up despite scoring a four ride maximum in Poland on Saturday.

Chris Harris was also a member of the Sheffield team that won the Premiership grand final at Owlerton last autumn. The two sides are both currently level on points in the standings, with the Tru7 Group Tigers placed in second on points difference. Sheffield won a recent away fixture at the Aces’ National Speedway stadium, having been ahead when racing was stopped after 10 heats because of rain.

And it was Sheffield who claimed the first War of the Roses bragging rights of the year when they knocked the Aces out of the Knockout Cup in a Super Heat in May.

But now the Tigers will be looking to get back on track on home shale following successive ten point defeats on their travels at King’s Lynn and Ipswich.

They have only lost once in the Steel City this term and raced to a comfortable 54-36 win over Birmingham last time out there.

Meanwhile, Belle Vue have managed just a single away win and have suffered four defeats on the road so far with their strong home record the major factor in their current third place position.

Tigers team boss Simon Stead says his riders have to be ready for the challenge as he expects the visitors to come out fighting.

“I’m sure Mark Lemon (Belle Vue team manager) will have his boys fired up for this one after we beat them on their own patch by 10 points on Bank Holiday Monday and everything else that went on that day,” Stead said.

“Belle Vue have been a bit up and down on the road so far this season but they’re one of those teams who could just turn it on away from the National Speedway Stadium if they’re in the mood.

“As I always say though, I’ve got full belief in our riders and as long as we ride how we know we can, then I have every confidence that the lads can go out there, get another win over the Aces and give us three more league points.

“Everyone by now knows what this meeting means to the supporters, so hopefully we can send them all home with a smile on their faces come 10pm.”

Due to England’s teatime kick-off against Denmark in the Euros, a slightly later start time of 8pm has been agreed.

Owlerton Stadium will be opening turnstiles at 4.45pm for anyone who wishes to watch the game in the Panorama Room bar beforehand.
