Roger Norton previews a busy weekend of local athletics action

The fourth and final South Yorkshire Cross Country League meeting takes place at Penistone Showground on Sunday.

It is also the South Yorkshire Championship meeting.

This is a stand-alone competition but the league title is decided on the best three results from the four races with Sunday’s event compulsory.

Nicola Devine (Rotherham) has won all three races so far in the women’s contest whilst Hallamshire’s Andy Heyes has two wins to his credit.

Both only need to turn up on Sunday to clinch their respective titles.

Lee Milburn (Rotherham) is the nearest challenger to Heyes with a win and a runner up spot.

Leaders in the age groups are: Under 17: Joe McDadd (Hallamshire) and Romany Tune (Rotherham). Under 15: SonnyBoy Hughes (Barnsley AC) and Annie Naylor (Hallamshire). Under 13: Jonson Hughes (Barnsley AC) and Issy Waugh (Hallamshire).

The timetable for Sundays races is: 11:00 Men and Under 17 Boys, 11:45: Women and Under 17 Girls, 12:15: Under 15 Boys, 12:30: Under 11 Girls, 12: 35: Under 11 Boys, 12:40: Under 13 Girls, 12:50: Under 15 Girls, 1:00: Under 13 Boys.

Sheffield schools High Storrs (Boys) and Notre Dame (Girls) have reached the final of the English Schools Cross Country Cup (Intermediate age group) to be held at Mount St Mary’s College, Spinkhill, tomorrow.

The first three schools from each of the nine regional finals have qualified with Notre Dame winning their regional final.

Annie Naylor was the individual winner with Rebecca Evans, Isabelle Causer, Polly Platts and Katie Smith all running well.

High Storrs were runners up in their regional final with Euan Tryner, Leni Scott, Olmo Combley, Noah Blackwood and Jack Thomas.

In a busy weekend the second Northern Open Indoor meeting takes place at the EIS tomorrow.

Among the entries are City of Sheffield and Dearne athletes Kaya Walker (High Jump), Daphney Adebayo (City of Sheffield and Dearne) ( under 17 60 metres and long jump), David Chapman (under 17 300) and Oliver Dane (600 metres).

Among the Hallamshire contingent Joel Vernon is listed for the under 17 60 and 300 metres.

The meeting starts at 10:15am.
