Omar Ahmed (Birchfield) and Olympian Eilish McColgan (Dundee) both won a bonus of £1,000 for breaking the previous records.

For Ethiopian Ahmed it was an outstanding run with his time of 29:00 beating the previous mark by 13 seconds.

Not that he had it all his own way.

Local man Andy Heyes (Hallamshire) put up strong resistance but Ahmed proved too strong and went away to win by 100 metres.

Heyes, however, could be well satisfied with his time of 29:19. Phil Sesemann (Leeds City) was third.

McColgan, based in Lancashire, has made the short trip across the Pennines for the last four years, winning comfortably each time.

She ran aggressively from the start and took 35 seconds off her own course record with a time of 31:48 which was a personal best.

As a marker for her winter fitness, this could not have been better for the Scottish international who is aiming for her third Olympic appearance in 2020.

It was double silver for the Heyes family, with Andy’s wife Lauren finishing a comfortable second.

Third woman was Phillipa Williams (Sheffield Running Club) whose time of 34:59 took a huge amount off her previous best.
