Tomorrow at Owlerton, Tigers host Championship leaders Leicester (5.30) where the home side can move to within two points with a victory.

But Nicol’s focus is currently on a big night individually in Glasgow.

The American has received a late call up to the FIM Speedway Grand Prix qualifier where he’ll mix it with the likes of current GP star Niels-Kristian Iversen, former World Champion Chris Holder and British Champ Robert Lambert.

Nicol says he can go and enjoy the experience and ride without any pressure on his shoulders, and is backing himself to spring a surprise or two here or there.

“Everything is going pretty good at the moment,” Nicol said.

“Don’t get me wrong there are still a few things I need to work on; I seem to be throwing away a couple of points every meeting that I probably shouldn’t be and I just need to stop that from happening.

“I had a good one at reserve last weekend at Sheffield and then I moved into the main body of the team at Birmingham on Wednesday. I got a couple more wins under my belt and things feel like they’re starting to go my way a little bit after a bit of a disappointing start to the season.”

He added: “I’m feeling comfortable out there again and my scores are starting to improve which is obviously important too.

“I can go into this qualifier with no pressure on me; there will be plenty of other riders who are fancied to go through a lot more than me so I can just go there, try and enjoy it and take something out of the experience.

“Then it’s on to Sunday in what is a pretty big meeting for Sheffield.

“Leicester have been winning almost everywhere; they’ve got a very solid team and we already know how they can ride at Sheffield.

“So we’re going to have to step it up a level as a team and rise to the occasion as they say.”
