"As good as it gets" - Fitzpatrick brothers share £1M prize after historic victory
Sheffield brothers Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans this weekend
Sheffield golfer Alex Fitzpatrick described victory in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with brother Matt as “as good as it gets” after the pair became the first brothers to win a PGA Tour event at the weekend.
The Fitzpatricks set a tournament record of -15 on Saturday but it had looked as though they may have blown their chance of winning in the final round having led by four at the start of the day. A double bogey on the 12th and a bogey on the 14th had closed the gap and a missed chance for a birdie in the 17th added more pressure.

However, Matt, who by his own admission, “was doing absolute zero to help him apart from the putt I made on 15” made his experience count in the end by setting up a birdie chance on the final hole which Alex took, much to the joy of the pair and their parents who were in attendance.
"It won't sink in," Alex said afterwards. "It's amazing to be here with him, my mum and dad. It's a lot of hard work and I can't believe we've done it. It's as good as it gets."
It’s been an incredible few months for the former Tapton School pupils. With this victory, Matt became the first player in more than two years to win back-to-back events on the PGA Tour and the first Englishman to win three times in the same American season.
In March, Alex grabbed his first DP World Tour win at the Hero Indian Open and has now earned a PGA Tour card to 2028 with exemptions to the next four Signature Events, next month’s US PGA Championship and the 2027 Players Championship.
"It was a struggle," said Matt afterwards as he paid tribute to his less experienced younger brother. "I was doing zero to help him but he was fantastic on the back nine. I said 'just give us a chance on the last to hit a bunker shot like that'. It means the world. I'm absolutely speechless, it was a grind today but he was unbelievable and I could not be more proud."
