Barnsley: Ex-Reds boss handed managerial reins at Hearts

The German, who was fired at Oakwell in December, did not take long to get back in work and becomes Craig Levein’s successor at Tynecastle.

In taking the job in the Scottish Premiership, he is the second recent Barnsley boss to end up in Edinburgh following Paul Heckingbottom's move to Hibernian last year.

The Jam Tarts have been chasing Stendel for some time and have finally landed their man.

A club statement read: “While it has taken some time for this process to reach its conclusion we firmly believe that Daniel is the right man to take the club forward.

“With our number one target now on board and his future pledged to Hearts, everyone at Tynecastle Park welcomes Daniel and hopes his appointment heralds an exciting new era for the club as, together, we look to climb back up the Ladbrokes Premiership table.”

Meanwhile, Stendel's successor in South Yorkshire, Gerhard Struber, is wanting his side to tighten up on the the road.

The Reds have kept just one clean sheet away from home this season and conceded three more in defeat at Cardiff last Saturday.

Scoring goals at the other end is not a problem, but the Austrian knows there has to be improvement.

He said: “We must learn to grow up.

“I hope this experience gets better for my boys and we can learn from that.”
