Opening day Tigers pay for their sins

SHEFFIELD Tigers began life in North Division One with a 24-9 defeat at Huddersfield - but they can take heart from their performance, having been in the game until midway through the second half when they had three players in the sin-bin.

Technical offences left Tigers short-handed and enabled Huddersfield to cement their grip on the game.

The home side led after five minutes following a penalty from George Hinchcliffe, and while centre Zak Hill pulled Tigers level with a penalty three minutes later, Hudders-field scored the first try on 10 minutes through flanker Ollie Scrimshaw, while Hinchcliffe converted to put his side 10-3 ahead.

But after a controversial refereeing decision angered the Sheffield side, they found an extra gear and battled back, but just failed to catch Ilkley.

Captain Ryan Amos scored Sheffield's first try, John Cox converting, and although Ilkley extended their lead to 24-7, Sheffield were not finished and stand-off Adam Byron scored again, Cox's conversion making it 24-14.

But controversy hit when, after calling a mark to fairly catch a high kick, Cox was tackled by Ilkley and had the ball stripped out.

With Sheffield expecting a penalty, the referee let play continue and Ilkley ran in unhindered for their final try, putting them 31-14 ahead.
