Why Dave Bassett is backing Slavisa Jokanovic to be a hit as Sheffield United manager

Dave Bassett, the legendary Sheffield United manager, has backed Slavisa Jokanović to be a success at Bramall Lane as he prepares to officially take charge of the Championship club after being appointed a month ago.

Jokanović will report to United’s Shirecliffe training base on Thursday, 24 hours after his contract with Qatari club Al-Gharafa officially expires.

In doing so, he will become the first ever overseas permanent manager of a club that Bassett memorably led into the top flight, with back-to-back promotions.

And, speaking to The Star, Bassett said: “Slav has been around and he’s an experienced guy. They haven’t gone for a guy new to management and on paper, you have to say he’s a decent choice as manager.

“He’s got the potential to do very well for the club. He’s managed different clubs and through different things, which helps. I was inexperienced going into Watford because all my life had been at Wimbledon, and I hadn’t understood the relevance of it. Slav does.”

Jokanović, who is looking for his third promotion from the Championship after leading both Watford and Fulham into the Premier League, faces the unenviable task of replacing Chris Wilder – the iconic boss, and Bassett’s protégé, who took United from League One into the Premier League.

“It’s not easy,” Bassett, who took over at Watford when Graham Taylor left after 10 years in charge, admitted. “Sir Alex left how long ago? And Manchester United are still looking for someone to replace him.

“Chris did a great job for Sheffield United But Slav will know he just has to win football matches. Do that and the fans will be happy.”
