Twenty years ago, goals from Laurent D’Jaffo and Carl Asaba saw Sheffield United emerge victorious in the 100th league derby against their city rivals Wednesday.
But what happened to the heroes of Hillsborough after that memorable April Fool’s Day in 2001?
Some stayed in football for a while, some drifted away completely and began other careers outside of the game.
For the sake of a little bit of nostalgia during the off-season, let’s have a look in a little bit more detail…
1. Simon Tracey
Tracey spent 15 years at Bramall Lane having joined the Blades from Wimbledon in 1988. He played more than 300 games for United and was part of the team promoted from the old Third Division in the 1988-89 season. Tracey was an ever-present during the following season when Dave Bassett's side went up to old First Division. He retired in 2003 and is now a coach at Northampton Town. Photo: Craig Prentis
2. Rob Kozluk
Arrived at Bramall Lane as part of the deal that took Vas Borbokis to Derby County, and had two spells as a United player. A much-loved character in the dressing room, Kozluk could play too and was a member of the United squad that won promotion to the Premier League. 3. Keith Curle
A full England international, Curle was in the twilight of his career when he arrived at United and spent two years at the Lane before moving to Barnsley and Mansfield. He went into management after retiring as a player, and led Northampton to a League Two play-off final win before being appointed at Oldham this year Photo: Gareth Copley
4. Shaun Murphy, Australia
Central defender Murphy made more than 150 appearances for the club, during which time he shot to fame on the international stage by scoring the only goal for Australia in a 1-0 win over mighty Brazil in the Confederations Cup third place play-off match in 2001.
