Noble gesture falls a fraction too short

Barnsley's Lee Noble can count himself a little unfortunate not to have earned at least a share of the spoils at Bethnal Green's York Hall last night after slipping to defeat by the narrowest of margins in his six round light-middleweight contest against Canning Town traveller, and current British Masters champion George Hillyard, referee Mark Green scoring the bout 58-57 in the Londoner's favour.

Ingle-trained Lee, whose record drops to 7-5, landed the heavier more eye-catching shots in a contest that was always close but the official scored in favour of the shorter Hillyard whose busier work inside eventually proved decisive.

There were also wins for the two Northampton-based but Ingle-trained fighters, Paul David picking up a 78-75 eight round cruiser-weight victory over Hackney's Andrew Lowe while Leonard Lothian won 39-38 against Colchester's Tom Glover at light-welterweight.

The evening's top of the bill event saw Norwich's Jon Thaxton, with Dominic and John Ingle in his corner, retain his British light-weight title with a 12th round stoppage victory over London based Scot Dave Stewart.
