Sheffield sportswoman is selected to represent Ireland

A law student from Sheffield who juggles her degree studies with competitive sport has been selected to play netball for Ireland.

Fran Duffy is celebrating making the national squad and is now preparing to travel to Singapore for the Nations Cup in early September.

The 20-year-old, of Bents Green, is appealing for sponsorship to help cover the cost of taking part. Including her return flight, the bill is expected to come to between £800 and £1,000.

Fran said: “This is a fantastic opportunity and a real dream come true to play international netball. However, I have to fund myself completely for all competitions, training, kit and so on. Being a student, this is quite a challenge and a concern so I am seeking a sponsor who can help.”

Fran, whose father has Irish heritage, is studying law at Manchester Metropolitan University. She previously attended Mount Mary’s College, an independent Catholic senior school and sixth form in the Jesuit tradition. Fran finished school, in the village of Spinkhill, off Junction 30 of the M1, after completing A levels in summer 2014.

It was whilst at school that Fran’s skills on the netball court first shone out. Her former school coach Ruth Powell said: “Fran was clearly an excellent player and was central to the Mount St Mary’s team. It’s great to see her doing so well in netball and we’ll be following the Irish team closely in the Nations Cup. We’re right behind you, Fran!”

Dr Nicholas Cuddihy, Headmaster of Mount St Mary’s College, is an Irish man with a fervent love for sport. He said: “Fran, we congratulate you and wish you well. I am personally delighted that you will be representing Ireland, a nation of sports enthusiasts and many sporting greats.”
