SHEFFIELD’S Jonny Marray crashed out of the mixed doubles in the first round of the US Open last night.

Marray and his Czech partner Vladimira Uhlirova lost in straight sets to Varvara Lepchenko and Donald Young of the United States, who posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

On Wednesday, Marray and Freddie Nielsen won for the first time since their stunning Wimbledon triumph, beating Fabio Fognini and Flavio Cipolla 7-5 6-3 to book their place in the second round of the last major of the year.

Marray and Nielson’s win All England Club should earn them a place at the end-of-season Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London in November.
