Leaders hit by a damp squib

THE South Yorkshire League was cursed by wet weather again with the Premier Division programme hardly getting out of the starting blocks before being rained off although a handful of matches were completed in the lower divisions.

Premier leaders Hallam were left to rue the rain because they would almost certainly have added another maximum to their seven-point cushion.

They had hosts Rockingham rocking at 50-5 when play was halted, Humphrey Emery taking three wickets.

Treeton were also in trouble at Elsecar at 52-5 when the rains came. It means Elsecar qualify for the Championship play-offs along with Hallam.

Wickersley star Haidar Jahangir looked set to add another big score to his tally being unbeaten on 70 with Wickersley on 131-6 against Wath.

With four games left the Premier title race now comes to a climax with leaders Hallam - leading by seven points - now coming up against the teams just below them.

In their last four matches they play Wickersley this weekend, followed by meetings with Treeton, Whitley Hall, and finally Elsecar.
