Keeper banished from final

NEW South Yorkshire League champions Elsecar have banned one of their top players - putting him out of a major final next Sunday.

He is wicketkeeper Matt Thewlis, formerly on Yorkshire’s books, and regarded as the top wicketkeeper in the league.

Elsecar slapped a three-match ban on Thewliss arising out of an incident in the game against Norton Oakes two weeks ago.

The ban took effect last Saturday - the day when Elsecar clinched the Premier Division title - and takes in the last league game next Saturday as well as the big Yorkshire Council Championship play-off final against Wrenthorpe at Treeton next Sunday.

In the match against Norton Oakes, Thewliss was reported by an umpire for what was allegedly “a serious incident”, understood to have involved verbal abuse against an umpire.

The matter will be dealt with through the league’s disciplinary procedure and Elsecar were asked what action they would be taking. They met and imposed a ban on Thewliss that effectively ends his season.

Ian Cotterhill, the SYL’s disciplinary chairman, said he “fully supported” the action taken by Elsecar.

“What has pleased me is that clubs and captains are seen to be taking on board their responsibility for the discipline of the team.”
