Joe first to take the plunge on busy weekend

IT’S the first weekend of competition at the Games and it is certainly a busy one for South Yorkshire’s Olympians.

The Aquatic Centre will be the focus of much of the action with Rotherham’s Joe Roebuck our first chance of a medal in the 400m medley.

Becky Turner, also from Rotherham, will be part of the 100m relay team in the day’s last event. At Lord’s Amy Oliver will begin her quest for an archery medal after the ranking round yesterday.

Sheffield’s Rachel Laybourne and the city-based volleyball team play their first group match at Earls Court against Russia. And table tennis pair Joanna Parker and Paul Drinkhall get their tournament underway at ExCeL.

On Sunday former Sharks boss Chris Finch and current player Nate Reinking take on Russia at he Basketball Arena, while former All Saints student Ben Pipes leads the men’s volleyball team against Bulgaria.

And on Horse Guards Parade ex University of Sheffield student Zara Dampney will play her first beach volleyball match.
