It all ends in tears, but they're not Ryan's

RYAN Rhodes reduced a powerful opponent to tears as he recorded another sensational stoppage to stake his claim for a title shot.

The Sheffield light-middleweight nailed strong African Olufemi Moses with a stinging left hook to the chin one minute 22 seconds into the second round at Barnsley Metrodome on Saturday night.

After an eight count, Moses tried to carry on; but within seconds the ref stepped in.

It had been a similar story at the same venue last time - when Rhodes stopped Paul Buchanan in an 89-second demolition job.

Yet Rhodes didn't have it all his own way in this one.

The 30-year-old may have started his 41st professional fight with an excellent straight left to Moses' jaw.

But the challenger, brought in because of injury to original opponent Ossie Duran, was brave, strong and resourceful.

He recovered enough to twice hustle Rhodes on to the ropes, pounding his guard with strong shots.

Moses did enough for Rhodes' corner to issue immediate instructions not get drawn into trading punches with him.

The one-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and Olympic competitor was finding his way through Rhodes' defences in the second too.

But Moses left himself open for a fraction of a second when he was off-balance, and Rhodes sent him crashing to the canvas.

After the ref waved the contest over, Moses promptly burst into tears.

Rhodes said afterwards: "I think his corner had built him up to such a degree he definitely thought he could beat me.

"Even though I caught him early on, he was dangerous. Some of his swings caught me on the gloves and I knew he meant business.

"He was pressuring me but I caught him on the right place. There wasn't much power, it was just speed. And that was enough!"

Nigeria-born Olufemi Moses, based in Manchester, was inconsolable in the dressing room afterwards.
