Ingle's salute to 'hero of city' Woods

CLINTON Woods was labelled the hero of Sheffield today.

The tribute to the Gleadless-based Fight Academy champion came from the city's rival boxing gym guru Brendan Ingle.

Talking about Woods' successful IBF light heavyweight defence over Mexican Julio Gonzalez at Sheffield Arena, Ingle said: "He showed real guts, he is a genuine hero of the city.

"The other fella was in fantastic shape and the Americans in his camp thought they would win it this time.

"But Richard Poxon and Dennis Hobson did a great job in Woods' corner, and Woods himself did what he had to when things were going against him.

"Clinton had been letting Gonzalez come on to him and needed to start pushing him back. He did that really well and showed he is made of steel. He reminds me of a boxer in the 1940s, Tony Zale (World Middleweight champion.).

"It was a brilliant fight, I couldn't take my eyes off it and the atmosphere was exceptional."

Hillsborough welterweight Kell Brook boxes at Nottingham on Saturday.
