Impressive Eagles sign new deals

SHEFFIELD Eagles have unveiled two further signings on the back of their 56-36 victory over Rochdale Hornets as centre Richard Newlove and second row Tommy Trayler penned new deals to remain with the club for the 2008 season.

The win puts Eagles nine points clear of Rochdale with three games to go and Rochdale having to play second placed Castleford and third placed Whitehaven, Eagles' place in the National League One looks to be secure.

Newlove, signed from Doncaster at the end of last season, has scored eight tries in 16 appearances in the 2007 campaign and is fully recovered from the broken arm which he picked up at Leigh in April and which kept him out of many of the early season games.

His recent use as an interchange player has worked with tremendous impact in lifting Eagles' intensity at crucial points in the game.

Trayler has been one of the most impressive young players to play for Eagles in recent years.

Having made three first team appearances in 2006, it was thought Trayler would play much of his rugby in the club's Senior Academy side. But his rich vein of form has seen him only play one game at reserve grade in 2007 and instead played 20 games so far for the first team, creating healthy competition in the squad for places in the pack.

"With our position in National League One all but assured, we're making sure we sign the players we want to keep for next season as early as possible," says Eagles coach Mark Aston.

"I think we'll be aiming to keep around 20 of the current squad and will be looking to add five or six players to strengthen and run with a squad of about 25 for 2008."

"Newlove and Trayler are obviously a big part of those plans. Both have impressed a great deal, especially Tommy who has played beyond all expectations. I'm looking forward to working with them again next year and I believe they will have big parts to play."
