MARK Thomas is the Iron Man of the Elite League having played 559 games, six more than Cardiff’s Phil Hill and seven more than his Sheffield Steelers team mate Jason Hewitt (552.)
“When I was asked who had played the most games I came up with several names and never even thought about myself” said Thomas.
“I have to admit I was delighted when I was told it was me though. I’m pretty proud that I have managed to stay fit and play for as long as I have.
“Phil Hill was my first choice and then I did think of Hewey. Ash of course has had some injuries, so has Jonathan Weaver, my team mate Jonathan Phillips took a couple of years off as well
“It would be nice if I could play another 60 games plus again next season, there is no reason why not. I do think having the three Steelers guys in myself Hewey and Jono in the top six shows that our club has some core players that hopefully bring stability and identity to the team.”
Thomas has played 559 Elite League games, other players over 500 are Hill (553), Hewitt (552), Marc Leavers (530), Russ Cowley (525), Greame Walton (521) and Phillips (515)
Forward Ashley Tait is racing towards two Elite League milestones once the 2012-13 season commences on 8th September.
Tait has presently scored 509 Elite League Points with 320 of those being assists.
Former Coventry Blaze forward, and team mate of Tait’s Dan Carlson holds both the assist and point scoring recors of 511 points with 353 of those being assists
“Ash requires just 3 points to overtake DC” said Steelers head coach Ryan Finnerty “that’s some achievement and one I am sure he will pass. He has been a remarkable player for a number of years and even though he is getting older his hunger and desire is as strong as ever. He will smash that record in time and set some incredible standards for those who follow him to try and chase down”
Next season might be a race for the assist record as Carlsons 353 is also being chased down by new Nottingham Panthers signing Jonathan Weaver who is ahead of Tait on 329 assists with Ashley being on 320.
