Tough defenceman Matt Stephenson - who has iced almost 130 games in the American Hockey League - has signed for Sheffield Steelers.

Subject to confirmation that he can study an MBA at Sheffield University, the Canadian will take over from the retiring Steve Munn.

Player coach Ryan Finnerty said: “I don’t see any issues with the University, I am sure he will be my new Munn, very solid defensively and tough.”

Stephenson, 6ft 2ins and 27 years old, spent his last two seasons with Texas Stars. He was obviously used as a stay-at-home defenceman; he has failed to find the net in the last three seasons and staked only seven assists.

“His points totals do not reflect his ability” insisted Finnerty. “He will be a horse for us.

“He was put in a defensive role (in the US), we need the same thing but expect him to be offensive as well.”
