FORMER Sheffield Steelers owners Bob and Maraini Phillips may have left the club and the area - but South Yorkshire detectives are still investigating their previous business activities.
In October, we revealed a police fraud team was studying the expenditure of 55,000 to settle debts apparently owed by Phillips after the crash of a Steelers' operating company the previous July.
Yesterday, Moss-Way-based Det Sgt Peter Hulley told The Star: "I am looking at this case to determine fully whether a crime has or has not been committed. It is fair to say that allegations have been made that a fraud has been committed and the file has been delivered to the CID office in east Sheffield, the station that covers the Steelers' office. Within the next couple of months we will resolve what action, if any, is being taken."
A bankruptcy petition was served on Phillips at his Cardiff home on Christmas Eve. He is due in the High Court soon. Steelers: P41
