Steelers duo sign up for German club

Sheffield Steelers' duo Jonathan Phillips and Anthony DeLuca have both signed up for a German third-tier ice hockey club… hoping the covid 19 rules and regulations in that country will allow them to see out the rest of the season.

The wingers are due to play in the Oberliga for Passau Black Hawks, after flying out this week.

Last week, the federal government announced new measures in the battle against coronavirus in Germany, restrictions which covered all aspects from rink attendances to junior development.

It was only recently that the government issued formal confirmation that the Oberliga is classed as elite sport - similar to the second-tier NIHL in the UK - meaning games can be played over there under controlled circumstances.

There will be no fans allowed in until the end of the month, at least.

Like Sheffield Steeldogs, who are planning their own pilot series of games, Black Hawks will depend significantly on money realised from streaming their matches on the web.

DeLuca, who set off from Canada on Wednesday, had to be as satisfied as he could be that the German nation - which has seen a worrying rise in covid cases since mid September - would be a viable place to play hockey in 2020-21.

But he is upbeat.

And the Arena fan-favourite DeLuca posted a message to Sheffield supporters on Instagram stating: "I promise I'll be back!"

Both he and his Steelers' captain, Phillips, have been desperate to strap the skates on again, and could be playing against SC Riessersee on Friday.

Sheffield coach Aaron Fox said: “It is a relief that they will be earning again. It is great to see Jono and Delucs out of here together.

"At this point, with so few jobs out there, getting these guys some much-needed hockey and some financial security is a great deal for both players.“They will have a quick turnaround and both could be in the line up on Friday.”

Black Hawks described 38 year old Phillips as "the undisputed leader of the Sheffield Steelers" roster since his arrival 14 years ago.

"Phillips should take a leading position in the Hawks team and also support the young players with advice and action" said the club.
