Steelers’ Brits on target

Have your say

Great Britain stayed on course for a potential World Championship gold medal with a 7-0 thrashing of Estonia in Ukraine...and there were three Sheffield Steelers players on the scorecard.

Britain raced into a 4-0 lead inside nine minutes with goals from Phil Hill (powerplay), Ashley Tait, David Longstaff and Jonathan Phillips.

That resulted in Estonia goaltender Villem-Henrik Koitmaa being replaced by Aleksandr Kolossov, but it failed to stem the tide and David Clarke, Ben O’Connor and Robert Dowd (powerplay) also netted by the end of the first period.

Koitmaa returned in goal for the start of the second period but, strangely, there was to be no more scoring.

The scoreline allowed GB coach Paul Thompson to give goaltender Nathan Craze his World Championship debut as he took over from Stephen Murphy with 13 minutes left, the pair combining for a 24-shot shutout.

GB are back in action at lunchtime today when they take on Lithuania before finishing their Division One Group B campaign against Poland on Saturday.

n Steelers bench coach and retired defenceman Neil Abel says he is yet to hear whether his services are to be retained next season.
