Sheffield Steeldogs led by two goals before eventually going down 5-4 to Manchester Phoenix in penalty shots.
The visitors stunned the home crowd after only two minutes with an Ashley Calvert goal and doubled their lead as Edgar Berbris scored short- handed. Martin Cingel pulled a goal back on 23.29, only for Dogs to restore the two goal advantage through Stuart Brittle. Slava Koulikov scored for Phoenix but the Steeldogs pulled away again with Brittle’s second.
Dogs couldn’t hold back the tide though and Ciaran Long made it 3-4 before Stephen Wallace equalised on 38.43 with a neat shot from the right face off circle to send the teams into the second break tied at 4-4.
Sheffield’s Pavel Gomeniuk was ejected from the game after a late hit on Josh Ward before the game went into penalty shots.
Slava Koulikov was first to beat netminder Ben Bowns. Chris Sykes missed Steeldogs’ first shot and then Juraj Faith did the same to give Phoenix a two shot advantage. Greg Wood silenced the crowd as he pulled one back and then Stephen Wallace was unable to secure the win when Bowns saved. The crowd tried to put Dogs’ Edgar Berbris off and when Stephen Fone saved his shot, the home fans went wild as Phoenix took the win and the extra point.
