Sheffield Steelers' siblings Sam and Adam Jones are rolling back the clock

Brothers rarely get to play in the same professional team - but Sheffield Steelers have provided a home to quite a few over the years.

Andy and Kevin Havenhand, Teeder and John Wynne, Ashley and Warren Tait, Matt and Ryan Rupert and Jackson and Brandon Whistle spring to mind.

Now Steelers are extending an invitation to two more siblings, Sam and Adam Jones.

Sam, 23, was signed by Steeler last Summer but never got to play because of the pandemic.

When the EIHL finally got Government clearance to play in April, Sheffield coach Aaron Fox added Adam to his roster, courtesy of last Monday's draft.

It was a huge bonus for Adam, 25, currently playing for Swindon Wildcats, one of the rivals of Sheffield Steeldogs in the ongoing Spring Cup.

"I was definitely excited when Aaron picked me. I’d spoken to my brother briefly about it being considered, but ultimately it was up in the air right until I got picked" he said.

"The last time we played together full-time was when I was 14, so over ten years ago. We were playing bantam (u15) AAA at the Okanagan Hockey School in Canada.

"It’s exciting to be back playing together though, even if it's only for a few weeks."

And are the defencemen alike on the ice?

"I’d say there are more similarities than differences, but Sam is definitely more offensively-minded than I am. I play a more defensive style.

"I think my strengths as a defenceman are in playing a reliable, solid defensive game, and is someone who isn’t afraid to play physically if needed."

Adam is blowing away the cobwebs with Swindon after months of inactivity.

"It’s great to be back playing games again after almost a year off.

"I got a call from (Player-Coach) Aaron Nell in Swindon as he was looking for a guy to fill in for a couple of weeks, which was perfect for me as I’m living in Bath right now which is just a short drive from Swindon."

As for his future, Adam’s not overly concerning himself with thoughts of playing for Steelers longer than the five week series.

"Right now, I’m just looking forward to getting back into playing, and we’ll see what happens after that. Outside of hockey I’ve just finished my masters in economics and am at a bit of a crossroads, weighing up my options with hockey and a career more related to economics.

"Realistically I’m going to perform as well as I can in the mini-series and see where I stand after that."

The skater says he has enjoyed a "great couple of years" as a player for Basingstoke Bison in the NIHL.

"I feel that I’m ready to take on a bigger role in the Elite League, which was why I had signed for the Fife Flyers prior to the season being cancelled."

It has long been an ambition for Adam to play for the Great Britain national team at the highest level.

"It’s definitely been a goal of mine and it would be amazing for both of us to be able to achieve that. As for this summer (World Championships) I’m not sure what the situation is, there are a lot of really good players on that team so we’ll have to see what happens."
