Sheffield Steelers set for 'weird night' up against Mathieu Roy

But Sunday sees the return to Sheffield of a player who has graced the Arena ice more than most, Mathieu Roy.

He will be on Glasgow Clan's roster as they look to gatecrash the party.

It will be a strange sight.

The 32-year-old French Canadian left Steelers for "retirement" two seasons ago, then offered his services to Sheffield, in vain, mid-way through the last uninspiring EIHL season, and then opted for a return in the colours of the Clan.

Roy was a great servant to the South Yorkshire club.

And former team-mate Robert Dowd happily acknowledges that.

"It is going to be weird playing against Roysy after playing with him for so long" said the GB forward.

"It will be nice to see him but obviously we have to do a job."

Asked what the player's best assets are, Dowd replied: "He knows where the net is. He is great in front of the net and makes really good plays.

"He seemed to score from everywhere. He is going to be one to watch."

Roy scored in Clan's opening League game, last Sunday, a 5-3 reverse at Cardiff Devils.

He was playing on the first line with Matt Beca and Scott Pitt.

The left winger only had two shots on goal, but buried one of them, with four minutes to go, from close-range.

Before the Glasgow encounter, Steelers take on Guildford Flames, on Saturday.

"Guildford are a very skilled team, very good offensively, they can put the puck in the net" said Dowd

"They have got some small skilled guys that make great plays so obviously we will have to wrap those up and try and play solid defensively and take our chances when we get them."

He said Glasgow had their number last season: "They seemed to pip us every time we played them they gave us some real trouble.

"It is a completely different team here and a completely different team there but I won't be expecting any less."
