Experienced defenceman Michael Schutte has been on Sheffield Steelers’ radar as they try and fill a final spot on their blue line.
Steelers contacted former captain Rob Wilson who coached against Schutte when the Canadian played for Vipiteno Broncos in Italy.
“He is a very good defenceman,” said Wilson. “So good that he got a job in the top league here in Italy after his spell with Vipiteno and played with Alleghe.
“He scored nine goals and had 29 points in just 37 games. He’d be a good signing for any team in the UK.
“He can quarter back your power-play, skates really well and makes good decisions.
“He has almost 200 AHL games under his belt and he knows the European scene well with his time in Germany and Italy. The only issue for Steelers is that they have offensive guys already signed in Sarich and Jorgensen.
“I would question if Ryan Finnerty needs another guy like them. I’d assumed they are looking for some toughness on their back end.”
