Sheffield Steelers have told winger Stefan Meyer they won’t be able to improve on their latest contract offer.

Last year’s leading goalscorer is weighing up his options for season 2014-15 after a fine debut year in the Elite League.

And while the Play-0ff champions want the Canadian back, they are not prepared to break the budget - a principle that they illustrated in the decision not to re-employ captain Steve Goertzen.

“We have made him a final offer, and hope he accepts,” said a spokesman. “We have three or four ‘possibles’ that have cropped up on our radar, so we will always have a fall-back position if a player opts to move elsewhere.”

One of those targets played in Italy last year, and was recommended to the club by former Steelers captain Rob Wilson.

One player they won’t be getting their hands on is three-year Nottingham Panther Matt Francis. He has joined Aalborg Pirates, in Denmark, who are coached by ex-Coventry coach Paul Thompson. The Sheffield spokesman said: “Matt was one of the better Elite League players over the last few years, one anybody would be keen to sign.”
