Sheffield Steelers and Braehead Clan will warm up for their joint British venture into the Champions Hockey League by playing back-to-back exhibition games a week before the first European round.

The English and Scottish sides will face-off at iceSheffield over the weekend of 15th and 16th August. They will compete for The Holiday Inn Royal Victoria Cup .

“It’s important we see the team in action before the CHL games,” said Sheffield coach Paul Thompson. “And with us starting so early an event like this was essential.

“There is nothing better than games to get your legs and timing prior to the CHL starting. I can use these games to have a really good look at our team and obtain a feel of the roster that we will have.

“We thank the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria for ensuring the CHL preview weekend can take place.”

Clan fans put on a good show at the Play Off finals at Nottingham Arena in the last weekend of season 2014-5.

And ‘Thommo’ commented: “I’m sure there will be a Scottish invasion from Clan fans coming down to see their side for the first time.

“Also by mid-August with the full Steelers’ team on show the interest levels in Sheffield will, I hope, be fever pitch.

“Some of the teams we will be playing will have been on the ice for a month or longer.

“We acknowledge we can’t match that but we are grateful for the week’s practice we will have leading up to the Braehead series and then a second weeks training before the CHL starts for real.

“I’m certainly looking forward to my first two games in charge of the Steelers. They will carry a lot more spice than regular pre season games.

“Both teams know the importance of being ready. These will be serious games.”

In the CHL, Steelers will face last season’s CHL runners-up Frölunda Gothenburg of Sweden and Finnish side JYP Jyväskylä. Clan will face Swedish side Växjö Lakers and ERC Ingolstadt of Germany.
